The Pioneer Mine Dam is still fishing well with a few local </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">St Helens</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU"> anglers hitting it up since opening week and catching quite a few Rainbows to 3-4lb on a mixture of soft plastic lures and Grubs floated under a float.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">The annual Pioneer Trout Fishing Competition will be on again this year on Saturday the 15<sup>th</sup> of October from </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">9:00am</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU"> until </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">4:45pm</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">. Entry is Adults $7 and Kids(6-14 years) $5 with some great prizes up for grabs. The Inland Fisheries will release 2 tagged fish and if caught on the day are worth $250 cash each to the lucky anglers, all other prizes will be awarded as a lucky draw so if you enter you could win regardless of the size of your fish. It is a licence free event with hot and cold food available at the dam and this year will see the first year that power boats will be allowed for use on the water.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">The lower Georges River and the South Esk were both flooded into surrounding paddocks for a number of weeks and a quite a few and although now starting to really clear up they are still running high and will need a few more weeks to come down to a more manageable flow for easier fishing. They have been producing some great fish however and you can expect some absolutely fantastic fishing for the coming summer.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">The Scamander River has really started to fire now especially in the lower reaches with some great fish being caught, and what appears to be a</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU"> slightly better run of bigger fish then in previous years, some anglers </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">reporting at least 1 or 2 40cm+ fish, almost 4lb </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">in the old scale, per session. The Pioneer Mine Dam is still fishing well with a few local </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">St Helens</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU"> anglers hitting it up since opening week and catching quite a few Rainbows to 3-4lb on a mixture of soft plastic lures and Grubs floated under a float.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">The annual Pioneer Trout Fishing Competition will be on again this year on Saturday the 15<sup>th</sup> of October from </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">9:00am</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU"> until </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">4:45pm</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">. Entry is Adults $7 and Kids(6-14 years) $5 with some great prizes up for grabs. The Inland Fisheries will release 2 tagged fish and if caught on the day are worth $250 cash each to the lucky anglers, all other prizes will be awarded as a lucky draw so if you enter you could win regardless of the size of your fish. It is a licence free event with hot and cold food available at the dam and this year will see the first year that power boats will be allowed for use on the water.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">The lower Georges River and the South Esk were both flooded into surrounding paddocks for a number of weeks and a quite a few and although now starting to really clear up they are still running high and will need a few more weeks to come down to a more manageable flow for easier fishing. They have been producing some great fish however and you can expect some absolutely fantastic fishing for the coming summer.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">The Scamander River has really started to fire now especially in the lower reaches with some great fish being caught, and what appears to be a</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU"> slightly better run of bigger fish then in previous years, some anglers </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">reporting at least 1 or 2 40cm+ fish, almost 4lb </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">in the old scale, per session. For the lure fisherman the Lucky Craft Pointer 65, the Bushy’s Stiffy Minnow and the </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU"><img src="http://www.sthelensbaitntackle.com.au/images/stories/trout.jpg" border="0" width="354" height="292" align="left" /></span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">Shimano Lure Project series have been the standout models, plastics such as 100mm Squidgy Wriggler in Wasabi and Bloodworm and for the bait fisherman the </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-AU">Prawns, Pippies, Mussels and Crabs are the standard diet needed. A small float with a small #10-12 hook and a tiny piece of white squid bait is the perfect rig for the garfish. There has also been some much larger Salmon in schools roaming the channel from Akaroa through to the Barway and some fish are reaching 3kg. These fish can be a little harder to locate and will generally not show many telltale signs on the surface like their smaller brothers and sisters do. Keep a look out for single fish jumping and don’t discount any surface disturbance no matter how small. The birds don’t seem to work these fish so don’t expect them to give the location of the fish away. As the water throughout the channel is not relatively deep (2-5m) the fish seem to hug the bottom pretty closely so heavier weights on soft plastics and weighted flies need to be used or let your lure drop to the bottom</span><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-US"> before starting the retrieve.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;" lang="EN-US">Large Garfish are still being caught in good numbers, although spasmodic in their activity, and can be found mostly around the sea grass beds down along the red channel markers. Offshore action has been a tad spasmodic but there are still plenty of small Albacore and larger than normal Striped Tuna in large schools. Some of the Striped Tuna have been reaching sizes in excess of 5kg and offering anglers great sport on light spin gear. Many anglers are reporting that there are larger numbers of Bream then they have seen during the last few seasons with a lot of larger fish present as well, many fish over 40cm to the fork are being landed regularly. Stand out lures have been the 100mm Squidgy Wriggler in Wasabi, Bushy’s Stiffy Minnow in Tassie Tiger &amp; Prowler, Shimano Lure Project Medium Minnow in Natural Shrimp &amp; Purple Ghost and the Atomic Hardz Bream Shad 40 Medium &amp; Deep in various colours.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;">The Beach fishing up and down the coast has also been reasonably consistent with good catches of Australian Salmon right the way from south of Four Mile Creek right up to Tailors Beach north of Binalong Bay. Many anglers are reporting that there are larger numbers of Bream then they have seen during the last few seasons with a lot of larger fish present as well, many fish over 40cm to the fork are being landed regularly. Stand out lures have been the 100mm Squidgy Wriggler in Wasabi, Bushy’s Stiffy Minnow in Tassie Tiger &amp; Prowler, Shimano Lure Project Medium Minnow in Natural Shrimp &amp; Purple Ghost and the Atomic Hardz Bream Shad 40 Medium &amp; Deep in various colours.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri;">The Beach fishing up and down the coast has also been reasonably consistent with good catches of Australian Salmon right the way from south of Four Mile Creek right up to Tailors Beach north of Binalong Bay. The Striped Trum</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">peter were</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> clo</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">sed to recreational </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">fishing for the months of September and October and the Rock Lobster closed completely to male and female fish for the same months.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Early reports have the Rock Lobster slow to start with the odd angler doing well but the vast majority falling well short of any quota’s……lets hope fishing picks up as the season progresses.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">The Stripey Trumpeter however have fared better, with the fish having a couple of months rest from angling pressure the fishing has started off very strong with many anglers reporting good catches. Areas such as the Binalong Patch, the 14 Mile patch off Eddystone Point and areas down off Bicheno and Seymour have all produced fish. The Striped Trum</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">peter were</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> clo</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">sed to recreational </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">fishing for the months of September and October and the Rock Lobster closed completely to male and female fish for the same months.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Early reports have the Rock Lobster slow to start with the odd angler doing well but the vast majority falling well short of any quota’s……lets hope fishing picks up as the season progresses.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">The Stripey Trumpeter however have fared better, with the fish having a couple of months rest from angling pressure the fishing has started off very strong with many anglers reporting good catches. Areas such as the Binalong Patch, the 14 Mile patch off Eddystone Point and areas down off Bicheno and Seymour have all produced fish. There has even been a handful of fish caught closer to home on Merricks Reef and the Gravel Patch</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">With the weather starting to stabilise a little better there has been much more action offshore lately with boat anglers reporting good hauls of King Flathead in 70-80 metres of water and appear to be quite large in size.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Further inshore </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Georg</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">es</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Bay</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> has been firing hard, some good seasonal rainfall has flushed the bay well and there have been large amounts of small bait fish moving throughout the bay. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Earlier in the month anglers were witness to some amazing fishing where large Australian Salmon around 4-5lb were hoarding schools into the shallow water all along the beach near the Sea Scout Hall and feeding on them in little more than half a metre of water……anglers were able to catch good fish right at their feet.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"><img src="http://www.sthelensbaitntackle.com.au/images/stories/jamie henderson with a 48cm king george whiting medium.jpg" border="0" width="331" height="219" align="left" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Up in the </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Moulting</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Bay</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> area, boat anglers have been consistently </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">catching good Australian Salmon up to 4-5lb and some good Tailor to around 2lb. Most of these fish have been caught using soft plastic lures with the Squidgy Flick Bait in Evil Minnow colour being very popular.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">The Silver Trevally are also hot on the bite and are being caught all over the bay. Anglers fishing Kirwins and Parkside Jeti have been rewarded by good sized fish as have boat anglers fishing the channel and Moulting bay areas.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Two species showing up in regularity at the moment have also been Squid and King George Whiting, both fantastic eating fish and take a little bit more searching to find but are well worth the effort. Casting Jarvis Walker Squid Jigs around the weed beds should produce the Squid if they are in the area and small #2 Gamakatsu Bait Keeper hooks laced with a Pipi bait and cast to the edge of the weed beds should produce the Whiting if they are around.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">The </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">Scamander</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU">River</span><span style="font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-AU"> has the Bream in full swing spawning and has been producing some fantastic fishing. Some local anglers fished Tooms lake as an early prospect finding very cold conditions but great sport with bags being caught bef</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">ore lunchtim</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">e on both days although many other</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> anglers thought the same with up to 30 boats on the water.. Also penstock Lagoon produced the goods early with a few anglers reporting early season bag limits and big fish.</span></p> <p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span></p> <p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">The start of Spring will see the movement of a lot of quality Bream up our many East Coast Rivers such as the Scamander and the </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Swan</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Rivers</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">. Good quality fish can be caught this time of year but will be slow to start until the water temperatures start to climb as the month progresses. This time of year offers good sport for all types of techniques, bait fisherman prefer crabs, freshly pumped nippers, mussels and red worms and fish them either lightly weighted or weightless. Some huge Bream to 45cm fall to this technique every year at this time and this season will be no different. </span></p> <p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Already good fish are being caught on </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"><img src="http://www.sthelensbaitntackle.com.au/images/stories/jason fidian salmon trevally large.jpg" border="0" width="380" height="252" style="float: right;" /></span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">lures, although plastic fisherman will see slower action to begin with but it will pick up as the month progresses. A popular lure has been the <a href="http://www.onlinetackleshop.com.au/--p-99.html?cPath=22_40_42_65" target="_blank">Squidgy Wriggler  100mm</a> in the Bloodworm colour and seems to produce the bigger fish but will need to be fished dead slow along the bottom to create a bite with plenty of S-Factor thrown on. Although the </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">water temperatures are quite cool and hot bites are hard to find many of the flats areas of these rivers can fire up when the winter sun is high enough to warm the water up a few degrees. Here the use of </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">hard bodies such as <a href="http://www.onlinetackleshop.com.au/fishing-lures-hard-body-fishing-lures-c-22_41_54.html" target="_blank">Bushy’s Stiffy’s</a>, <a href="http://www.onlinetackleshop.com.au/fishing-lures-hard-body-fishing-lures-c-22_41_186.html" target="_blank">Lucky Craft Pointer</a> and <a href="http://www.onlinetackleshop.com.au/fishing-lures-hard-body-fishing-lures-c-22_41_192.html" target="_blank">Zipbaits Khamsin Jr DR</a> are proving to be good fish takers </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">and at times the fish are being quite aggressive when taking the lure.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="text-decoration: none;"> </span></span></span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Offshore good bags of Flathead have been taken both off </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Tailors</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Beach</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> just south of the Gardens and also off the Scamander River Mouth in about 20 metres of water however the Flathead have been patchy along the rest of the coast.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">With excellent calm winter weather of late anglers have been able to head offshore regularly chasing Striped Trumpeter and Blue Eye Trevalla with quality Hapuka, Gemfish and Ling being caught as well.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Most of the Striped Trumpeter have been coming from the closer reefs but anglers also need to be reminded that September and October sees a closed season for Striped Trumpeter.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Further inshore </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Georges</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Bay</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> has fired well with good quality</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"><img src="http://www.sthelensbaitntackle.com.au/images/stories/ken henderson big garfish large.jpg" border="0" width="380" height="253" align="left" style="float: left;" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> Salmon around the 2kg mark, plenty of big Silver Trevally and lots of Tailor to 2kg as well. Many of these fish have been coming to the soft plastic lures with some anglers preferring to fish with baits such as Pippies and Prawns.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">A tasty edition to the bay at this time of year is the “Snotty Trevally” or Blue Warehou; these are a hard fighting fish, great fun to catch and are very nice to eat. Most fish have been taken by jetty fisherman both on the </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Beauty</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Bay</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> jetty and the Kerwins jetty and a common technique is to use burley to attract the fish and then small Sabiki rigs with multiple flies, such as the Wasabi Bait Catchers, and a small piece of chicken breast on each hook.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Large Garfish are still being caught in good numbers but w</span><span style="font-family: Arial;">ill start to decline as the month progresses. They can be found mostly around the sea grass beds down along the red channel markers. A small float with a small #10-12 hook and a tiny piece of white squid bait is the perfect rig for the garfish. Some local anglers fished Tooms lake as an early prospect finding very cold conditions but great sport with bags being caught bef</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">ore lunchtim</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">e on both days although many other</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> anglers thought the same with up to 30 boats on the water.. Also penstock Lagoon produced the goods early with a few anglers reporting early season bag limits and big fish.</span></p> <p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span></p> <p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">The start of Spring will see the movement of a lot of quality Bream up our many East Coast Rivers such as the Scamander and the </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Swan</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Rivers</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">. Good quality fish can be caught this time of year but will be slow to start until the water temperatures start to climb as the month progresses. This time of year offers good sport for all types of techniques, bait fisherman prefer crabs, freshly pumped nippers, mussels and red worms and fish them either lightly weighted or weightless. Some huge Bream to 45cm fall to this technique every year at this time and this season will be no different. </span></p> <p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Already good fish are being caught on </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"><img src="http://www.sthelensbaitntackle.com.au/images/stories/jason fidian salmon trevally large.jpg" border="0" width="380" height="252" style="float: right;" /></span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">lures, although plastic fisherman will see slower action to begin with but it will pick up as the month progresses. Although the </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">water temperatures are quite cool and hot bites are hard to find many of the flats areas of these rivers can fire up when the winter sun is high enough to warm the water up a few degrees. The surface waters of most East Coast inlets have been murky with surface temperatures as low as 7 degrees however with some decent tides pushing good clean 13-14 degree water in the fishing has still been holding strong and once the grey clouds have lifted it has made way for some beautiful days of glassy calm conditions and some warm winter sun. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Although the Bay has seen some dirty water on top it hasn’t deterred schools of Salmon busting up the surface up and down the bay feeding hard on schools of small baitfish. These schools of small and medium sized fish appear on the surface and then disappear just as quickly and racing around trying to catch them can prove frustrating to say the least. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">There has been some much l</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">arger Salmon however being caught by anglers lucky enough to find the schools. Many of these schools have been roaming the channel from Akaroa through to the Barway and some fish are reaching 3kg. These fish can be a little harder to locate and will generally not show many telltale signs on the surface like their smaller brothers and sisters do. Keep a look out for single fish jumping and don’t discount any surface disturbance no matter how small. The birds don’t seem to work these fish so don’t expect them to give the location of the fish away.
